Memorial to the Rune Singers from Suojärvi

1930's. Jehkilä. Memorial to the Rune Singers

The memorial to the Rune Singers was unveiled in the Jehkilä Village near the Leppäniemi Local History Museum on July 22, 1934. The inscription on monument said:

”In memory of the Suojärvi rune singer and old spiritual culture

O'er the meadows and the mountains,
To awaken song and gladness
In the forests of Wainola,
On the snowy plains of Suomi.

Karelia Cultural Society erected this monument in 1934”

In Soviet times the monument to the Rune Singers was converted into Soviet monument and no later than 1963 unveiled on the common grave of the Soviet soldiers in Salmijärvi Village.

In 1977, due to the liquidation of Salmijärvi settlement, monument was again transferred and unveiled on the common grave of the Soviet soldiers in Kuolismaa.
